PS5 Preorders Will Be Back at GameStop Today | IGN

UPDATE: GameStop announced it will put up new PS5 console preorders today, September 25, both in store and online. They should appear here when they go live. We’ll update this article when the time comes.

Sony PS5 preorders went live last week, to the surprise of everyone. Walmart was the first to go live in the US and GAME UK led the charge in the United Kingdom. What followed was a wild ride of over-stressed websites, multiple purchase attempts, and maybe a few broken dreams. As of this morning, the initial wave of PS5 preorders are sold out everywhere. That includes the bundled deals on PS5 preorders at GameStop.

If you already have a PS5 preorder, or you plan on getting one once they become more widely available, there are plenty of chances to preorder PS5 controllers, games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and accessories like the awesome 3D Pulse Wireless PS5 headset.

Amazon PS5 Preorders

If you preordered PS5 from Amazon, you might want to check your email. The online retailer sent out a note today to customers who managed to grab a PS5 or PS5 Digital to let them know due to overwhelming demand for the system, deliveries might not make it in time for launch day.

Where to Preorder PS5

If PS5 preorders come back online, these are the retail links where you’ll be able to find them. Here’s hoping.

Last night Walmart put out a statement saying if you missed out on preordering through its website, you’ll be able to “pre-order in Walmart stores on 9/22 for $499 (digital edition for $399).” However, today Walmart said it will not “proceed with the planned store pre-order to control store traffic and keep our customers safe and socially distanced.” After the initial statement, Walmart said consumer interest in the PS5 online exceeded its expectations, and so it decided to cancel the in-store preorders. It added “customers can still get the console on November 12 when it’s released.”

Amazon’s PS5 preorder page has popped in and out of existence since the PlayStation event yesterday. Initially it was a placeholder page, then it disappeared entirely, only to reappear again for a brief 20 minute window. Twenty minutes is all it took for Amazon PS5 preorders to completely sell out. Some people never even saw the page live, in spite of trying desperately.

Last night Sony started sending out invitations for preorders to those who signed up on their site. Check your inbox to see if you have one. If so, you can grab yours on Friday.

GameStop PS5 Preorder Bundles (SOLD OUT)

In spite of massive price tags, the preorder bundles at GameStop are also sold out. These include the consoles as well as extra PS5 controllers and accessories, among other extras. Demand for PS5 was high enough people didn’t seem to mind dropping a few hundred extra dollars to secure a bundled deal.

Preorders for PS5 were supposed to begin in full today, September 17, at certain retailers, according to a tweet from Sony. But that turned out not to be the case, as you might have noticed.

PS5 Controllers and Accessory Preorders

PS5 Dualsense controllers are available for preorder for $69.99 from almost every major retailer, in signature white. We’re still waiting to see if we’ll get any other Dualsense colors before launch.

PS5 Release Date, Price, and Recent News

Both versions of the PS5, with or without a disc drive, have a November 12 release date in the US. And we now know how much PS5 costs: $499 for the standard version, and $399 for the discless digital-only model.

Earlier, developers shared their takes on the SSD and 3D Audio features of the upcoming console. It’s shaping up to be a very cool console. Sony also set up a page for PS Plus members to sign up for a chance to secure a PS5 preorder directly from Sony.

We also got news Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart is definitely a PS5 launch game, but during Gamescom it was confirmed to be a “launch window” game, which could mean anything.

Will PS5 Be Easy to Get?

So far, it’s been very tough. Sure, lots of people have preordered their PS5 or PS5 Digital, but it’s not without a few hiccups or total site-outages.

PS5 Price

The PS5 standard console with a disc drive costs $499, while the discless version will cost $399.

PS5 Game Prices

The good news is we know games like Far Cry 6 support free upgrades from PS4 to PS5. While it looked as though all PS5 and Xbox Series X games will cost $70, more recent developments seem to point to publishers holding onto the current $59.99 price for many new games, at least for the time being. It appears now many first-party Sony PS5 games will cost $70 after all, including Demon’s Souls and Destruction All Stars. However, Spider-Man: Miles Morales has a $50 price tag, and looks amazing by the way.

Will My PS4 Controller Work on PS5?

No. Well, not at least for PS5 games. Sony confirmed the DualShock 4 won’t work for playing PS5 games, but you WILL be able to use your existing PS4 controllers to play “supported PS4 games.” Speaking of which…

Will PS5 Be Backwards Compatible?

Yes. Well, for PS4, we know some supported games will work. In a (now removed) entry on its support page, Ubisoft said of PS5 backwards compatibility it “will be available for supported PlayStation 4 titles, but will not be possible for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation games.” So unlike Xbox, which is leaning into backwards compatibility all the way back to the original Xbox as a selling point, it looks like PS5 backwards compatibility comes with some asterisks.

However, Sony introduced the PlayStation Plus Collection, Sony’s answer to Xbox Game Pass. At launch, PS Plus members will be able to download and play some of the biggest PS4 games as part of their subscription.
