Call of Duty Zombies Creator Announces New Studio in Partnership with PlayStation – Summer of Gaming | IGN

The creator of Call of Duty’s Zombies mode, Jason Blundell, has partnered with fellow Treyarch veteran Dave Anthony to reveal a new studio at Summer Game Fest today: Deviation Games.

The team is working on a new IP that is still in very early development, having just spent the last year building out their studio personnel. Unfortunately, while they debuted the studio today, they didn’t have anything from that IP to show.

However, Blundell and Anthony did appear with Summer Game Fest’s Geoff Keighley today to talk about the culture of their studio, which they called “simple” and focused on creative freedom, and using their financial security to take time to build out their IP.

They also revealed that they will be making their game in partnership with PlayStation. On the PlayStation blog, Blundell elaborated further about the studio and its work with the company.

“We’re drawing on what we’ve learned over our collective decades making games, but we’re also out to make something fresh and brimming with innovation like you’ve never experienced before,” Blundell wrote. “We’re not afraid to say that our ambitions are super high: we’re setting out to make a huge, content-rich game with a focus on a lot of action and a lot of energy, but let’s leave it at that for now and hopefully it won’t be long before we can share more.”

Blundell departed Treyarch last year after 13 years culminating in his role as game director of the Zombies franchise. Anthony, meanwhile, was the game director and writer of Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2.

Deviation Games’ reveal today was a part of Summer Game Fest, which is in turn part of a lead-up to E3 2021 this weekend. This year’s E3 includes events from Xbox, Square Enix, Ubisoft, Nintendo, Devolver Digital, and more, all of which can be watched and caught up on through IGN’s Summer of Gaming.
