Jock, start the engine! Indiana Jones 5 is about to see the series’ globe-trotting archaeologist lift off on another adventure and he’ll have more than a few comrades joining him.
The Indiana Jones franchise has been dormant since 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, though Disney has been plotting a revival for years. Indiana Jones 5 will be the first chapter in the series to be directed by someone other than Steven Spielberg, with director James Mangold now carrying the torch.
The movie’s story has been confirmed to conclude Indiana Jones’ journey, though virtually nothing else is known about the plot at this stage. What we do know is a lot of the actors involved – most recently Antonio Banderas.

Harrison Ford is returning for another adventure as the globe-trotting archaeologist, having portrayed the wise-cracking character for the better part of the last four decades. He’s stepped out as the Fedora-clad adventurer in all four of the franchise’s titular films to date, beginning with Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981.
Last year, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy re-confirmed Ford’s involvement in the project, addressing fears that mounting delays and Ford’s age might derail the sequel. Photos of the titular star started to emerge shortly after Indiana Jones 5 entered production. Ford was recently spotted in full costume, donning his brown jacket and fedora once more.
Lucasfilm announced in April that Phoebe Waller-Bridge had joined the cast of the upcoming fifth Indiana Jones film, but didn’t confirm which character she would be playing. Presumably as the first major new cast member announcement, though, and considering Waller-Bridge’s profile, she will be one of the film’s lead characters.
“I’m thrilled to be starting a new adventure, collaborating with a dream team of all-time great filmmakers,” said the film’s director James Mangold in a statement at the time. “When you add Phoebe, a dazzling actor, brilliant creative voice and the chemistry she will undoubtedly bring to our set, I can’t help but feel as lucky as Indiana Jones himself.”
Ford’s next co-star was found in Mads Mikkelsen, who is known for his starring roles in Hannibal, Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding, and the action thriller Riders of Justice, released earlier this year. The details of who he’ll be playing have been kept under wraps for now, so it’s unclear whether he’ll be appearing as an ally or an antagonist.
Either way, Mikkelsen says he’s “very, very excited” about joining the franchise. “I do think I’m invited in to create a character – I think that everybody wants that,” he told Collider, teasing his mysterious role. “That’s why they pick certain actors that they think can come up with certain things, and it will be a collaboration as it always is.”
Marvel actor Thomas Kretschmann was the next name to crop up in casting reports for Indiana Jones 5. He’s reportedly been cast “in an undisclosed role,” though considering his previous roles, some may assume that he will be portraying a villainous character, just like many would expect of Mikkelsen.
Kretschmann is certainly no stranger to blockbuster movies, having previously starred as Baron von Strucker in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain Englehorn in Peter Jackson’s King Kong, and vampire lord Damaskinos in Blade II. He also briefly appeared as German Captain Wilm Hosenfeld in the World War II drama The Pianist.
In May, it was revealed that Boyd Holbrook had also landed a role in the next installment of the series. Holbrook’s casting reunites the actor with his Logan director James Mangold, who is helming Indiana Jones 5 after franchise director Steven Spielberg stepped down from the role over disagreements about the script.
In Logan, Holbrook played Donald Pierce, the primary antagonist of the film. The actor is also known for his lead performance in the 2018 reboot The Predator as well as his breakout role in the first two seasons of Narcos. Additionally, Holbrook recently wrapped filming on Netflix’s upcoming television adaptation of the DC series Sandman.
Shaunette Renée Wilson
Holbrook’s addition to the Indiana Jones 5 ensemble was also reported alongside the casting of Shaunette Renée Wilson. Wilson had a featured role in Marvel’s Black Panther and was part of the main cast on Fox’s The Resident for its first four seasons. She also starred in a recurring role as Axe Capital’s Chief of Staff Stephanie Reed in Billions.
In July, Deadline reported that Antonio Banderas had become the latest star to sign onto the Indiana Jones 5 project, though, once again, details about who he’ll be playing were excluded from the casting announcement, which means we’re no closer to finding out if he’ll be buddying up as one of Indy’s friends or battling against him as a foe.
Banderas famously portrayed the sword-wielding vigilante in 1998’s The Mask of Zorro. He also earned an Oscar nomination for 2019’s Pain and Glory and recently portrayed an antagonist in The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. He also recently wrapped filming on Sony’s Uncharted alongside Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg.
